Are You Still You? The Subtle and Strange Effects of Hormonal Birth Control

Ouadie RhabbouronMay 19, 2026

Discover how hormonal contraception has revolutionized women’s daily lives by offering safe control over their fertility, with varied repercussions on their physical and hormonal well-being.

Are you considering starting the contraceptive pill or are you already thinking about it? Discover here everything you need to know about its effects, advantages, and potential disadvantages.

How the contraceptive pill works

The pill works by altering the body’s natural hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of pills:

  • Combined pills : containing both estrogen and progestin. They block ovulation, alter cervical mucus, and prevent implantation of an egg.
  • Progestin-only pills : containing only progestins. They are often recommended for women intolerant to estrogen or who are breastfeeding.

Effectiveness : When taken correctly, the pill is more than 99% effective. However, forgetting to take it, drug interactions, or vomiting can reduce its reliability.
