What is the ideal frequency for showering?

Ouadie RhabbouronMay 28, 2026

The frequency of your showers should be adapted to your skin type. If you have dry or sensitive skin, frequent showers can increase tightness, cause redness, or even worsen certain conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Dermatologists recommend limiting yourself to  two to three showers per week , using  lukewarm water  and  gentle cleansing products .

Conversely, oily skin doesn’t necessarily require more frequent washing. In fact,  too many showers can stimulate sebum production , leading to an undesirable rebound effect.

Your hair says a lot

Hair also plays a role in how often you shower. If you have curly or textured hair, washing it once a week is more than enough.  This type of hair needs natural sebum  to maintain its suppleness and moisture.

On the other hand, people with fine, straight hair can shower (and wash their hair) more often, because  sebum spreads more quickly , giving a more visible greasy appearance.
